Special Guest Session of the Industrial Engineering English Club: “Recent trends in warehousing”.

We will meet on September the 26th, 2017, at the CREE Auditorium, Room 1001, Bldg. 315. Our guest is Luis Felipe Cardona Olarte.

Guest Speaker: Luis Felipe Cardona Olarte

The current growth of e-commerce around the world is challenging companies to offer a more diverse set of products and provide fast and free shipping. From 1,000 skus companies are moving to have 10,000 and from offering 2-week delivery times, companies are being pressure to offer 2-day free shipping and even in some cities and special products one-hour delivery. Companies like Amazon, FedEx, ebay, Aliexpress, and DHL are leading the way implementing disruptive changes in distribution operations to cope with the growing customer expectations.  Come and see how distribution leaders have proved that efficient operations are critical for business success and how big data, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, wearables, robotics, the gig economy and drones are transforming our distribution landscape.

We hope to see you there!

Fifth Meeting, April 28th, 2016

Greetings, Humans. Live long and prosper.

We will have the Fifth Meeting of the Industrial Engineering English Club on April 28th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., in room 1004, School of Industrial Engineering. Our guest speaker will be Juan Manuel Salamanca, and the topic of his presentation will be, simplistically put, Smart Bicycles.

Juan Manuel Salamanca García

  • Ph.D. in Design - Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.
  • Masters Degree in Design Direction - Domus Academy, Milano.
  • Industrial Designer - Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogota.
  • Researcher and Professor, Universidad Icesi, Cali.
  • Short Biographical Information

About the presentation:

Platoon Behavior
Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control:
Our city is starting to build an exclusive network of bicycle paths. In this network, we would like to move safely and efficiently. This project is aimed to encourage a platoon behavior for the cyclists, in such a way that they keep a safe distance with each other, and that their effort is efficient because they minimize the need for braking and pedaling, synchronizing their progress with traffic lights and congestion.

Wireless communications make the bicycles talk to each other. Feedback mechanisms warn every rider to brake or speed up, in order to keep an efficient pace. The system could expand to help the riders choose their paths, notify them of upcoming hazards and build a comprehensive network of connected vehicles and devices to make commuting more enjoyable and productive for everybody.

Other sections:

The Industrial Engineering English Club will have its regularly scheduled sections:

  1. Our guest speaker, Juan Salamanca.
  2. The language-related section.
  3. The fun and games sections.
As usual, we will not disclose the contents of sections 2 and 3. They will be a surprise for us all.

So,  we hope to see you at this meeting.

Cheers!

Dear Friends of the English Club:

I have posted the lists of songs that I have available right now. We can always find some more in YouTube and other places, plus the Karaoke machine that professor Manyoma brought today.

Please check out the karaokes I have in my computer at List-of-songs.txt and the ones that I have on DVDs on List-of-songs-in-DVDs.txt.

Choose a couple of songs, and let me know which ones you would like to sing. We can probably find them.

We will see you this afternoon.

Leonardo Rivera.
