Third Meeting: September 11th, 2015

Dear English Club Members:

We will have the first meeting of the semester next Friday, September the 11th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. We will probably meet in room 1004 or 1002, I will let you know when I'm sure.

The speaker and detailed subject will be revealed in an upcoming e-mail. If you want to read something before the meeting, readings related to Lean Manufacturing would be of help.

We will also have a debate. Since that day will be the 14th anniversary of the  terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York, we will discuss the theories of conspiracy related to the prior knowledge and involvement of the american government in these attacks. Did the US government help organize the attacks? Did they benefit from them? I will find interesting links for you to read and we will organize a team-based debate on the meeting. I expect this debate to be sipirited and respectful.

Please be on the lookout for updated information in the blog for the Club. The url is

Second Meeting - June 6th

Dear English Club Members:

I am sorry to say that we will not be able to hold the second meeting of the club this Friday, May 29th, as it was planned. Professor Carlos Julio and Leonardo Rivera will be out of the University in a meeting and it will be impossible to arrive on time for the club.

Therefore, we will hold our second meeting on Friday, June the 5th. Our main speaker will be Professor Carlos Julio Vidal and we will publish the reading materials next week so you can read them before the meeting.

We hope to see you there.

Sincerely yours,

First Meeting - After Action Report

Hello and Welcome!

We had our first meeting today. I am happy to report that it was a smashing success. Some highlights of the meeting:

  • We had 22 attendees, counting three professors amongst them. Their presence helped to start the discussion and the round-table conversations that ensued.
  • Professor Pablo Manyoma presented a very informative and precise talk about Integrated Solid Waste Management. Thanks for your excellent presentation!
  • We then discussed our opinions and positions around this subject that affects everyone.
  • For the language-focused section we discussed some idioms. If you want to know what they are, use the link below to access the Drive for the club and download the presentation titled "Idioms".
  • For fun, we sang along some songs with the lyrics projected on the screen. We played the songs in increasing order of speech velocity. The results were not only interesting, but hilarious as well. If you want to see the songs and the videos that we used, you can find them in the link below, in the presentation called "English-Cub-Session-1".
  • Finally, we announced that the next meeting will be May 29th, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on room 1004, building 357. Our main speaker that day will be professor Carlos Julio Vidal.

If you have suggestions about new and fun activities, songs that you want to sing or anything else that you want to comment, please send me an e-mail to:

Thanks.

Hello and Welcome!

Hello and Welcome to the Industrial Engineering English Club!

School of Industrial Engineering, Universidad del Valle.

This activity is also endorsed by ANEIAP Univalle and CEII (Centro de Estudios de Ingeniería Industrial - Universidad del Valle).

This is a space where we will discuss current topics in Industrial Engineering, presented by professors, students and guest speakers. Sometimes we might even have guest speakers from abroad via Web-Conference.

The format of the meetings will be as follows:

  1. The main part of the meeting will have a presentation, about half an hour long. This presentation will be related to current topics in Industrial Engineering, research areas that professors want to share in the club and industrial experiences of guest speakers.
  2. The guest speaker will pose a couple of questions for the participants, and we will work in teams to discuss them and present our positions for the whole room. This section will be another half an hour long.
  3. We will also have a section related to specific details and curiosities of the English language. Some days we will discuss formal English, some others current use of the language. Some discussions will relate to grammar, others to pronunciation. We will try to keep you on your toes to learn new things about the language.
  4. Last, but not least, we will have a playful section, devoted entirely to entertainment but conducted (as always) entirely in English. We will watch and discuss videos, have some karaoke sessions, try our hand at tongue twisters and other fun activities to practice our English skills.
To prepare for the meetings, we will publish some reading material for the participants to read before the meeting, to be informed of the subject to be discussed. It will be in a Google Drive folder associated with the e-mail accounts from @correounivalle.edu.co.

In the next post we will inform you of our first activity and inaugural meeting.

Again, Hello and Welcome!!!
